Established in 1917, the Department for Armament changed its name and structure twelve times.

At present, the Department for Armament is a modern structure undergoing a full process of adaptation to the needs of the military derived from the reorganizing and restructuring process it goes through as a consequence of its integration into NATO structures, while having clear cut responsibilities for technical development and procurement of the military. In order to meet its goals, the department seeks to further its bilateral technical-military cooperation relations with NATO member and partner countries and others, thus contributing to strengthening international cooperation in the field of armament.
