Soldiers from SEEBRIG command, Constanta will participate in mission in Afghanistan


233 Romanian soldiers from the SEEBRIG command and two support sub-units will participate for six months, starting February 2006, in ISAF mission.

The first echelon military leaving ceremony will occur January 16, at 11.00 hours at “Mircea cel Batran” Navy Academy, Constanta in the presence of NATO and international organizations officials, representatives of SEEBRIG members and local authorities. The Romanian Armed Forces will be represented by a delegation headed by General Dr. Eugen Badalan, Chief of the Romanian General Staff.

The agreement on SEEBRIG command deployment in Afghanistan was signed during the annual South East Defence Ministerial in Washington D.C., December 5 and 6, 2005.

The Brigade command consists in 101 positions with 18 belonging to Romania. Our country ensures the staff company (125 soldiers) and the transmission one (90 soldiers plus 30 Turkish soldiers). The Brigade will act under the UN mandate and NATO operational command. During the mission in Afghanistan the Brigade will be called Kabul Multinational Brigade IX (KMNB IX).

SEDM initiative was launched in March 1996 aiming the regional cooperation and good neighborliness, increase of defensive capacity and cooperation by collective efforts and facilitation of joining the Euro-Atlantic institutions. The participating states are Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, FYROM, Romania, Ukraine (since December 2005) and Turkey. As observers, Croatia, Slovenia and USA are participating in political and military consultations.

Presidency of the Committee of Coordination of the Process of Reunions of the South East Defence Ministers and the Director Political Military Committee and SEEBRIG command are ensured for two years, by roation, by all the member states. July 1, 2005 occurred in Constanta, where the SEEBRIG command is since 2003, the ceremony of receiving the political-military presidency and SEEBRIG military command, now held by Albania, and Bulgaria, respectively.
