Admiral Gheorghe MARIN, Ph.D.


Chief of General Staff

 


Admiral Gheorghe MARIN was born in Negru Vodă, Constanta County, Romania, on January 1st, 1952.

He graduated „Mircea cel Bătrân” Naval Academy from Constanta, in August, 1974. He served as Combat, Navigation and Signal Service Officer onboard of a Fast Patrol Boat (Missile) Squadron between 1974 and 1978.

After having graduated the Military Academy, Joint Branch Section in 1980, he was appointed Commander of 196th Fast Patrol Boat (Missile) until 1981.

Between 1981 and 1985, he was assigned Staff Officer, Operations Section of the Naval Forces Headquarters.

Then, from 1985 to 1989, he acted as Chief of the Programming – Software Section of the Naval Forces IT Center.
He graduated the Economic Studies Academy, Economic Planning and Cybernetics Faculty, in Bucharest, in 1987.

Between 1989 and 1995, he was assigned Commander of the Naval Forces IT Center.
In 1993, he got his Ph.D. in Military Science.

Between 1995 and 1999, he was appointed Commander of the Electronic Warfare Brigade within the Romanian Naval Forces.
He graduated Marshal College, Strategy and Defence Economy Course in Germany, in 1999.

He was the Commandant of "Mircea cel Bătrân" Naval Academy between 1999 and 2003.
He graduated the National Defence College from Bucharest, in 2000.
He got his Master Degree in Shipping, Free Zone, Stock Market Management and Marketing, in 2002, at Constanţa.
In 2002 he was authorized as Ph.D. Adviser in the Military Science at the National Defence University.

Between 2000 and 2003 he was Associate Professor at the Mathematics and IT Teaching Staff, Civilian Naval Faculty.
He attended the Flag Officer Course at NATO Defence College in Rome, Italy, in 2003.
In 2003, he was appointed Director of the General Staff; he served in this position until 2004 when he was appointed Chief of Naval Forces Staff.

He has been the Chief of General Staff from September 13th, 2006. He was promoted to Admiral on November 3rd, 2006.
Currently, he is Associate Professor, “Mircea cel Batran” Naval Academy, Constanta.

Admiral Gheorghe Marin was awarded “Meritul Militar” Medal IIIrd, IInd, Ist class; “Meritul Militar” Order IIIrd, IInd, Ist class; „Steaua României” National Order, in the Rank of the Chevalier; Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana-Grande Ufficiale; Romanian Armed Forces Emblem of Honor (October 25, 2007), “Stiinta Militara” Emblem of Merit, I class, on February, 2008 for his successful accomplishments throughout his professional activity.

He published 20 books, 8 manuals, 9 specialty treaties, especially in the Military Management and Computer Programming field as well as over 70 articles in specialty magazines from Romania and abroad.

In 2008, “Dunarea de Jos” University from Galaţi awarded Admiral Marin the “Doctor Honoris Causa” title.

Admiral Marin is part of many associations and council boards: The Academy of the Romanian Scientists; The General Association of the Romanian Economists; The International Association of the Navy Teaching Staff; Balkan Environment Association (BENA); The Scientific Council of the Romanian Institute for Naval Research; National Defence College Foundation; „George C. Marshal“ Association from Romania; National Board for the Certification of the Higher Education Titles, Diplomas and Certificates.

He is married. He has one daughter.

He speaks fluent English.
