Activation of EUFOR Reserve for Bosnia and Herzegovina
Romania augmented its contribution to EUFOR ALTHEA Mission by activating the reserve for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Thus, 27 soldiers of the Infantry Company, Intermediate Reserve of Operation EUFOR ALTHEA, generated by the 22nd „Romanați” Infantry Battalion from Caracal (which is subordinated to the HQ Multinational Brigade South-East from Craiova), arrived in the theater of operations from Bosnia and Herzegovina today, 27th February.
The soldiers represent the forerunner detachment and will be followed at the end of next week, by other 107 soldiers from the same company, who will be equipped with– PIRANHA III C APCs.
The 134 soldiers add up to those 69 Romanian ones who are currently conducting missions in the de theater of operations from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Romanian detachment is under the OPCON of the Defence Staff’s Joint Forces Command and will be integrated into the Multinational Battalion of EUFOR ALTHEA Mission. The Romanian soldiers who will be deployed to Camp Butmir, from Sarajevo, will conduct missions in support of the local authorities, for a month, with a view of maintaining a security and stability climate in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The decision to augment Romania’s contribution was taken following the request made by EUFOR ALTHEA’s leadership.
The force augmentation is part of the threshold approved by the Homeland Defense Supreme Council on the Romanian Armed Forces’ means and forces that can be made available for the participation in missions and operations outside the national borders in 2022.

The EU’s Mission EUFOR ALTHEA has been conducted on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s territory since 2004, based on the United Nations Organization mandate.
Romania’s participation in Operation EUFOR ALTHEA reflects the consolidation of its commitment assumed within the EU and the NATO-EU partnership, representing, at the same time, an element to maintain security and stability in the region.
The Multinational Battalion of EUFOR ALTHEA Mission is made up of two permanent companies, one generated by Turkey and the other, by alternation, by Austria and Hungary, a Romanian platoon and other four reserve companies generated by Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Austria.
