Romania procures Sentinel Radar Systems
Ministry of National Defence welcomes the notification to the US Congress sent on Monday, October 7th, by the Department of State regarding Romania's purchase of AN/MPQ-64 F1 Sentinel Radar Systems, through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) security assistance program.
The procurement program includes up to four AN/MPQ-64 F1 radars, including logistics support, training services, communications equipment, technical assistance and transportation services to equip ground-based air defence battalions of the Romanian Armed Forces.
The radars will help improve airspace surveillance, especially against the latest threats posed by the unmanned aerial vehicles with low travel speeds and low radar footprints.
The funding instruments offered by the US Government through the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) Program will be used for the purchase of the first two radars, which will allow contracting in the shortest possible time after the signing of the Letter of Offer and Acceptance agreement. This Agreement is to be provided to the Ministry of National Defence by the US Government in the coming weeks.
Minister of National Defence emphasized, in this context, that the state-of-the-art military equipment procured through the collaboration with the United States of America has essentially changed the profile of the Romanian Armed Force at the level of action capability in the Black Sea region and enhanced interoperability with allied and partner armed forces.
„State-of-the-art Sentinel radars will complement Romania's air defence capabilities, especially in terms of early detection of unmanned aerial vehicles, which evolve at low travel speeds and have low radar footprints, threats that manifest themselves in the proximity of national borders, in the context of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine", Minister Angel Tîlvăr stated.

The AN/MPQ-64 F1 Sentinel is the latest configuration in the Sentinel radar family and is a three-dimensional radar - it can measure the distance, direction and elevation of both manned and unmanned aerial objects, data it automatically reports to the command and control systems of the short-range Ground Base Air Defence (GBAD).
This radar system supports multiple command and control interfaces, providing consistent air surveillance and fire control data for GBAD systems. It can detect, identify and track unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), cruise missiles and fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft.
SPECIFICATION
The value notified to the US Congress by the Department of State related to a program specific to the Foreign Military Sales Congress process is determined by the US Government based on internal procedures and may exceed the actual value of the purchase, established by the Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) type agreement.
In the case of the AN/MPQ-64 F1 Sentinel Radar Procurement Program initiated by Romania, the US Congress was notified of a value of approximately 90 million dollars.
