Defence Minister’s meeting with his counterpart from the Republic of Turkey
Minister of National Defence, Angel Tîlvăr, had a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Turkey, Yaşar Güler, on Wednesday, October 23rd, in Istanbul.
The talks agenda focused on defence cooperation projects, a special emphasis being placed on the security situation in the Black Sea region.
In this context, the Romanian official expressed Romania's appreciation for the collaboration with the Turkish side within the Mine Countermeasures Black Sea Task Group - MCM Black Sea, and emphasized the importance of this initiative in ensuring security and freedom of navigation in the Black Sea.
"MCM Black Sea is an example of effective cooperation within the North Atlantic Alliance. Freedom of navigation in the Black Sea is essential, and actions to counter the threats posed by sea mines are a priority. The two previous activations of MCM Black Sea demonstrated an excellent level of interoperability among the participating states’ naval forces. We are grateful for the contribution of the allies and I wish good luck to our soldiers during the third activation, which starts in two weeks", Minister Tîlvăr said.
Also, the two ministers discussed the ways of implementing the decisions adopted at the NATO Defence Ministers Meeting held last week, in Brussels. During the talks, a special emphasis was placed on the subject of military mobility and on the signing of the Letter of Intent regarding the creation of a military mobility corridor between Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey.
Another topic of common interest addressed by the officials was the cooperation in the field of defence industry, in order to develop military capabilities.
At the end of the meeting, the officials appreciated the excellent level of the bilateral political-military dialogue, considering it a valuable tool to harmonize positions on topics of common interest.
