Defence Minister’s meeting with the Ambassador of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Romania
Minister of National Defence, Angel Tîlvăr, had a meeting with the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Romania, Giles Matthew Portman, on Wednesday, January 15th, at the MoND headquarters.
The discussions focused on key aspects related to the security of the Black Sea region, the consolidation of the defence dimension of the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as well as on enhancing cooperation among allied structures. A key discussion point was strengthening the defence and deterrence posture on NATO's eastern flank, especially in the Black Sea area, given the current security challenges.
Minister Tîlvăr emphasized the positive impact that the defence cooperation agreement, signed in November 2024, in London, with the Secretary of State for Defence of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, John Healey, has in strengthening regional security and joint commitments within NATO. He also pointed out Romania's intention to continue developing the Strategic Partnership with the United Kingdom, through active involvement in joint security and defence initiatives, by supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression and strengthening support for the Republic of Moldova, in order to increase stability and security in the region.
"The defence cooperation agreement with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland confirmed the importance of our strategic partnership and opened new opportunities for strengthening bilateral military relations. Both countries have increased their efforts to ensure a firm and effective response to the security situation in the Black Sea region, thus strengthening the deterrence and defence posture in the context of regional and global security challenges", the Romanian official emphasized.
The Ministry of National Defence continues its intense dialogue with Romania's strategic partners to constantly enhance international defence cooperation, which will generate the tools necessary to manage the complex security challenges posed by the unpredictability of the international environment.
