Romania - Republic of Moldova Symposium on the topic: "80 years since the end of the World War II. Historical perspectives and interpretations" took place in Iași and was organized by the Institute for Defence Policy Studies and Military History and the Agency for Military Science and Memory of the Republic of Moldova, on May 13-14.
The scientific event brought together historians, researchers and specialists in military history from Romania and the Republic of Moldova, being structured in five thematic sections, which addressed major themes such as the breakup of Greater Romania in 1940, the Romanian Armed Force's campaign in the West, the geopolitical reconfiguration of the world following the inter-Allied conferences in 1945, contemporary reinterpretations of key historical moments and the analysis of particular cases from military history.
The symposium was also attended by students from the Faculty of History of "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University in Iași, their presence offering the event an important educational dimension.
The symposium marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, as well as the 85th anniversary of the territorial seizures in the summer of 1940. The event aimed to address topics such as the impact of the conflict on the two Romanian spaces, the historiographical interpretation of the moments of 1940 and 1945, as well as the assessment of the geopolitical implications of the end of the war. Beyond the symbolic commemoration of two defining historical moments for the evolution of the Romanian people in the mid-20th century, the conference aimed to promote deep reflection on history, on the war and its consequences.
