NATO Defence Ministers Meeting concluded
Minister of National Defence, Angel Tîlvăr, participated in the NATO Defence Ministers Meeting
held on October 17th and 18th, at the NATO Headquarters, in Brussels.
On Friday, October 18th, on the second day of the meeting, Minister Angel Tîlvăr participated in the North Atlantic Council session dedicated to the assessment and adaptation of NATO's deterrence and defence posture, as well as to the implementation of the decisions adopted at the Anniversary Summit in Washington. The Romanian official emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to accelerate the adaptation of the Alliance's deterrence and defence posture, a special emphasis being placed on the provision of forces and capabilities necessary to implement the regional defence plans.
"The Russian Federation's war of aggression in Ukraine and Russia's increasingly provocative attitude in the region pose direct threats to the stability of NATO's eastern flank. The Black Sea region is not only a strategic point for Romania’s defence, but also an essential region for the defense of the entire Euro-Atlantic space. NATO must be prepared to quickly and efficiently respond to any challenge in this area, in order to ensure the security of all allies", Minister Angel Tîlvăr stated. The Romanian official emphasized that Romania supported the need for an integrated and effective air and missile defence system at allied level, which was also highlighted during the last B9 Meeting in Bucharest.
Romania informed the NATO members about the measures adopted at the allied and regional levels with regard to the recent incursion of a UAV into the national airspace. In this context, the allies and NATO Secretary General appreciated the way the Romanian authorities and the Supreme Commander Europe (SACEUR) acted, through the missions performed by the Romanian and Spanish aircraft, confirming Romania and NATO’s reaction capacity to these incidents.
"Russia's illegal aggression against Ukraine has generated multiple situations of violation of allied airspace, including the situation recorded yesterday, in Romania. I want to assure Romania of NATO's full solidarity and I also want to express our appreciation for the Romanian authorities and SACEUR’s reaction and quick and effective response measures to this incident," Secretary General Rutte said.
Taking into consideration the recent unauthorized incursions by Russian drones into the allied airspace, including in Romania, Poland and Latvia, the defence ministers discussed potential coordinated NATO responses.
"We have conveyed to our partners that we supported the efforts to strengthen NATO's Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD), including through the rapid implementation of the rotational IAMD model," the Romanian Minister of National Defence added.
The meeting emphasized the firm commitment of NATO member states to ensure stability and security of the region and to support Ukraine's defence efforts in the face of external aggression.
