Defence Minister, in Brussels, at the Coalition of the Willing Meeting led by Great Britain and France
Minister of National Defence, Angel Tîlvăr, participated on Thursday, April 10, in the Coalition of the Willing Meeting in the defence ministers’ format, held at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels, led by Great Britain and France.
The event followed the meetings held in March in London and Paris, dedicated to supporting Ukraine and strengthening the European security architecture.
Romania, with the longest land and maritime border with Ukraine among NATO member states, is directly interested in ending the conflict and concluding a peace agreement that would include solid security guarantees for Ukraine. According to the decisions adopted at the Homeland Defence Supreme Council meeting on March 28, Romania emphasized, at this meeting, the importance of transatlantic cooperation in this process, as well as its position entailing that peace negotiations cannot take place without the participation of Ukraine and Europe.
As mentioned during the meeting of the states’ leaders participating in the Coalition of the Willing on March 27, the officials have reiterated that Romania is not considering sending troops to Ukrainian territory. Instead, the possibility of providing logistic support to international forces involved in the implementation of post-conflict security guarantees is being analyzed. The Ministry of National Defence will follow the planning and coordination process with international partners. This commitment reflects Romania's strategic position and the importance it attaches to Euro-Atlantic security. During the meeting, the Romanian official emphasized the importance of a lasting peace in Ukraine that can also contribute to the security and continuity of the European path of the Republic of Moldova.
Ensuring maritime security and freedom of navigation are essential elements of the future peace agreement. In this regard, Minister of National Defence emphasized the role of the Mine Countermeasures Black Sea Task Force - MCM Black Sea - and the added value of this allied cooperation initiative to contribute to safe navigation and maritime security.
