Defence Minister’s meeting with the Ambassador of Germany to Bucharest
On Monday, March 3, Minister of National Defence, Angel Tîlvăr, received the visit of the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Romania, His Excellency Peer Gebauer, at the MoND headquarters.
During the meeting, the two officials had an in-depth dialogue on key issues regarding regional and Euro-Atlantic security. They also welcomed the celebration of 145 years of diplomatic relations between Romania and Germany on February 20, 2025, highlighting the significant progress made at bilateral level, including in the field of defence. The discussions focused on the security situation as well as the status of cooperation between the two countries, including the ongoing procurement programs.
The importance of consolidating the preparedness level of the European Union member states to support defence efforts was emphasized, the need to undertake more responsibilities for their own security being also highlighted.
In this context, the two officials pointed out the importance of adequate funding for the defence sector, through the adoption of new instruments available to the European Union states.
Minister Angel Tîlvăr highlighted the solid relationship with Germany within the framework of European defence initiatives, emphasizing the importance of implementing the project funded by the European Commission program regarding the construction of a black powder factory in Romania. This topic was also addressed in the recent discussions with representatives of the German Company Rheinmetall, as part of the Munich Security Conference.
Another key point of the meeting was cooperation within NATO, especially the strengthening of the defence and deterrence posture on the Alliance's Eastern Flank, with a focus on the Black Sea region.
"In the current security context, strengthening the deterrence and defence posture on the Eastern Flank, in a robust and coherent manner, remains a major priority for us, including in view of the NATO Summit in The Hague. Strengthening the transatlantic relationship, unity and allied solidarity are essential in the coming period", Minister of National Defense emphasized.
The officials also discussed the support provided to Ukraine in the context of international efforts made to resolve the conflict, firmly condemning Russian Federation’s aggression. In addition, they stressed the need to continue supporting the Republic of Moldova on its European path.
