General Gheorghiță Vlad, at the NATO and the UE Military Committee Meetings, in the Chiefs of Defence format
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Gheorghiță Vlad, participated in the NATO and the European Union Military Committee Meetings, in the chiefs of defence format, which took place on May 14 and 15, in Brussels.
The NATO Military Committee meeting agenda focused on strengthening the deterrence posture, on measures to adapt to the current security challenges, as well as on the allied space defence planning process. A separate session was dedicated to the NATO-Ukraine Council, during which the officials analyzed the situation generated by the war on the Romanian borders and reaffirmed the firm support for Ukraine.
During the European Union Military Committee Meeting, the officials assessed the security situation and support provided to Ukraine as well as the measures necessary to be taken in order to adapt to the new strategic and institutional realities, and aspects related to the EU-led ongoing naval operations.
"The two meetings were a good opportunity to coordinate with allied and European counterparts, both in terms of current missions and operations, and in terms of the commitments undertaken in the medium and long term. The Romanian Armed Force remains fully dedicated to strengthening its deterrence and defence capacity, both at national and allied levels, as well as to developing military capabilities and the defence industry", the Romanian Chief of Defence stated.
As part of the two meetings he attended, General Gheorghiță Vlad had a trilateral working meeting with his counterparts from Bulgaria and Turkey and a bilateral meeting with the Chief of Defence of Finland.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization Military Committee is the highest military authority of NATO. Meetings at the level of Chiefs of Defence are usually held twice a year at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels and once in one of the Alliance’s member countries. The Committee may also meet in specific formats, such as the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council or other configurations adapted to the issues addressed.
The European Union Military Committee (EUMC), the forum responsible for the Common Security and Defence Policy, is made up of the chiefs of defence of the EU Member States. After harmonizing national positions, they contribute to formulating guidelines to strengthen European security.
