MoND leadership, on official visit to Lithuania

On Friday, May 22^nd, a delegation of the Ministry of National Defence, led by Minister Radu Miruță, is paying a working visit to the Romanian Detachment "Carpathian Vipers" deployed to Šiauliai Air Base, in Lithuania. 

As part of the visit, Minister Radu Miruța will have a bilateral meeting with his Lithuanian counterpart, Robertas Kaunas.

The "Carpathian Vipers" detachment, consisting of nearly 100 soldiers and six F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft, is deployed to Lithuania, to the Šiauliai Air Base, and conducts enhanced Air Policing Missions throughout April - July 2026. 

The Romanian Air Force is on its fourth deployment in Lithuania, where it ensured the protection of the airspace integrity of the Baltic States and NATO. 

The first Air Policing Mission was conducted between August and October 2007, with a detachment of 67 soldiers and four MiG-21 LanceRs of the 71st "General Emanoil Ionescu" Air Base. The second and third missions were performed between April and July 2023 and, respectively, April and July 2025, with 100 soldiers and four F-16 Fighting Falcons of the 86th "Lieutenant Aviator Gheorghe Mociorniță" Air Base.
