A MoND delegation, headed by Minister of National Defence, Radu Miruță, participated on Tuesday, June 2nd, in the NATO Capability Generation Conference, at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), in Mons, Belgium.
During a special session dedicated to security challenges on the Eastern Flank of the Alliance, Minister of National Defence presented details regarding the incident that occurred in the municipality of Galați, on Friday, May 29th, when a Russian drone exploded on the roof of a block of flats.
On this occasion, Minister Radu Miruță emphasized the need to strengthen deterrence and defence measures on the Eastern Flank and requested additional contributions from member states to enhance allied monitoring, early warning and defence capabilities against emerging threats.
Minister of National Defence reaffirmed Romania's firm commitment to strengthening NATO's defence and deterrence posture and to maintaining an overall and coordinated approach to the security challenges generated by the Russian Federation's war of aggression against Ukraine.
At the same time, Radu Miruță highlighted the increase in the national defence effort to 3.5% of GDP and the ongoing measures to develop military capabilities, modernize equipment and increase the level of force readiness. In this context, Romania aims to capitalize on the cooperation and financing opportunities available at Allied and European levels, including through the SAFE (Security Action for Europe) instrument, to accelerate procurement programs, develop the national defence industry and strengthen the contribution to Allied collective security.
"Romania is investing in its own defence, but time is not on anyone's side and until the capabilities are delivered, we need support from allies," Minister Miruță said.
The defence minister also visited the Defence Staff Representation at SHAPE, where he had discussions with the Romanian military personnel operating within the Alliance's command structures. On this occasion, he appreciated the professionalism and dedication of the Romanian military personnel and emphasized their important contribution to the accomplishment of NATO missions and to the promotion of Romania's security interests within the Alliance.
