Defence Minister’s Meeting with the Ambassador of the United States of America to Romania

On Friday, October 23rd, Minister of National Defence, Ștefan-Radu Oprea, received, at the MoND headquarters, the visit of the Ambassador of the United States of America to Romania, H.E. Darryl Nirenberg.

 

The talks agenda covered recent developments in the regional and international security environment, and focused on the situation in the Black Sea region, the support for Ukraine in the context of the war of aggression launched by the Russian Federation, as well as joint efforts to strengthen the deterrence and defence posture on the Alliance's Eastern Flank.

 

In the context of the continuous degradation of the security situation in the Black Sea region, the Romanian official emphasized the importance of strengthening air defence, the capability to counter unmanned systems, and the protection of critical infrastructure in response to evolving threats.

 

Minister Oprea emphasized that the enhancement of the Strategic Partnership with the United States represents a priority throughout his mandate, and highlighted the continuity of Romania's commitments and its determination to make a substantial contribution to Euro-Atlantic security. At the same time, he expressed his appreciation for the contribution of U.S. military personnel to collective defence and for the close cooperation between the two countries’ armed forces.

 

In the context of the review of the U.S. military posture in Europe, the Romanian minister reaffirmed Romania's interest in consolidating the U.S. presence on national territory. In this regard, he highlighted the investments in military infrastructure and Romania's availability to improve the conditions for hosting and supporting U.S. forces, as well as the strategic and operational advantage that Romania offers for achieving shared security objectives.

 

At the end of the meeting, the two officials reaffirmed their shared commitment to developing the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the United States, oriented toward concrete results, and to continuing close cooperation in the field of security and defence, for the benefit of regional and transatlantic stability and security.
