Romanian Air Force modernization: contract signed for the acquisition of four mobile approach and landing guidance radars
On Tuesday, October 27, the Ministry of National Defence, through the General Directorate for Armaments, signed the contract for the acquisition of four mobile precision approach and landing radar systems, with the consortium formed of THALES ROMANIA SRL Company and THALES LAS FRANCE SAS.
The contract is valued at approximately 326.5 million RON, excluding VAT, and deliveries will be carried out in phases, starting 2028.
The new radar systems will contribute to the modernization of the Romanian Air Force's air traffic control capabilities by ensuring the identification and tracking of aircraft, as well as their guidance during approach and landing phases, including in difficult weather conditions and hostile electromagnetic environments.
The systems can be used for both military and civil aircraft, during the day and at night, and will enable the transmission of information to national or NATO air command and control systems. The mobile nature of the systems will allow them to be used in alternative locations, reducing dependence on the fixed infrastructure of air bases and contributing to increased operational flexibility and resilience.
The acquisition is part of the procurement programs aimed at modernizing the Romanian Air Force and increasing its capacity to fulfill missions, including within allied context.
At the same time, the contract highlights the industrial dimension of Romanian-French defence cooperation. The participation of THALES ROMANIA SRL, a company headquartered in Romania with activities in advanced technologies field, provides opportunities to leverage the expertise of Romanian specialists, develop technological skills, and strengthen industrial capabilities in Romania, including through the transfer of know-how and technology. Thales specialists in Romania, alongside local partners, will contribute to the installation, integration, and long-term availability of the systems. The goal of the Ministry of National Defence is that investments in the Romanian Armed Forces’equipping should contribute not only to increasing defence capacity but also to supporting economic activity, highly skilled jobs, and the defence industry in Romania.
