The first shootings with the Romanian Armed Forces’ HIMARS System
The first live firing exercises with the HIMARS system - which entered the service of 8th HIMARS Brigade “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” in 2021 – were conducted at “General Ion Bungescu" National Training Center for Air Defence in Capu Midia, over 8-10 June.
The shootings were caried out as part of “Unirea 22” and “Viforul 22” exercises and executed by units of the 8th HIMARS Brigade “Alexandru Ioan Cuza”, according to a fictitious scenario aiming at practicing the techniques, tactics and procedures required to provide fire support to a task force conducting costal defence operations.

The procurement of the HIMARS System (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) was established by Law no. 46/2018 in order to achieve the “Indirect fire support capability” stipulated in the “High Mobility Artillery Rocket System” Procurement Program- HIMARS.
The paper stipulates the procurement of three systems, with 18 launch installations each, including, but not limited to, ammunition, C2 elements, sensors, logistic support, maintenance, cryptographic and special regime equipment, as well as staff training service at all levels.
The achievement of the indirect fire support capability is of utmost security interest for Romania and significantly contributes to the consolidation of the Strategic Partnership with the United States of America as well to the fulfilment of the commitments assumed by our country within NATO.
The multiple rocket launchers, which are important parts of the ground artillery system, act independently or integratedly with the rest of the systems to accomplish the missions. Due to its interoperability, the multiple launch rocket system can be made available to NATO, with a view of meeting the commitments assumed by Romania within the Alliance and the regional initiatives.
HIMARS System has proved its operational maturity in real conflicts, being tested during military operations.
