Romania prepares to augment its troops deployed to Kosovo with an infantry company
As a result of the authorization given by the North Atlantic Council regarding the augmentation of forces to manage the current situation in the Western Balkans, Romania will deploy, in the near future, a company-level small unit, as part of the strategic reserve placed at SACEUR’s disposal, within the NATO operation KFOR conducted in Kosovo. Romania, as a NATO ally and EU member state, has undertaken the commitment to contribute with military forces and equipment to the effort of maintaining a stable security environment in the Western Balkans region.
The company is deployed in accordance with the provisions of Law no. 121/ 2011 regarding the participation of the armed forces in missions and operations outside the Romanian territory, in accordance with HDSC Decision no. 225/2022 regarding the approval of the Plan for the employment of the Romanian Armed Forces that are deployed to missions and operations outside the Romanian state’s territory, throughout 2023.

Romania has currently almost 330 soldiers deployed to the theaters of operations in the Western Balkans, of which approximately 250 in Bosnia and Herzegovina (our country being one of the most important troop contributors to EUFOR ALTHEA EU operation in this country, manning the Chief of Staff position, which is designed for general brigade level) and approximately 80 soldiers in Kosovo, in the NATO – led KFOR operation.
