Letter of Intent signed Romania, Bulgaria and Greece for the creation of a Military Mobility Corridor
Minister of National Defence, Angel Tîlvăr, signed the Letter of Intent for the creation of a Military Mobility Corridor between Romania, Bulgaria and Greece on Wednesday, July 10th, during a ceremony held as part of the Washington Summit.
This initiative marks a significant progress in strengthening NATO's defence and deterrence capabilities in the region.
In the context of the 2023 NATO Summit in Vilnius, the officials agreed upon the need to consolidate the deterrence and defence posture of the Alliance by adopting new defence plans and accelerating the military adaptation. This adaptation includes the ability to augment forces and equipment and provide logistical support by facilitating cross-border transit of forces and capabilities, even during peacetime.
The project aims to enhance transport corridors to meet the military mobility requirements by creating certain supply routes (road and rail) among the participating states, reducing bureaucracy during peacetime and maximizing efficiency in emergency and crisis situations, in accordance with the NATO and national initiatives.
The Letter of Intent signed by Greece, Bulgaria and Romania is closely correlated with NATO's priorities of ensuring collective defence, improving rapid reaction capabilities and increasing interoperability among member nations, contributing to a fair burden sharing among Allies.
"Close collaboration with Bulgaria and Greece will allow us to respond more effectively to the current and future security challenges. We will continue the talks and remain open to other similar initiatives, which will lead to the consolidation of Romania's role within the North Atlantic Alliance", Minister Tîlvăr emphasized.
The project will benefit from the existing initiatives run at the European Union level, aiming at a coordinated approach between NATO and the EU in the field of military mobility. The implementation of the project at national level will require concerted efforts among various institutions, involving the entire governmental spectrum.
