The Minister of National Defence, Angel Tîlvăr, participated, on Thursday, February 13th, in the Meeting of NATO Ministers of Defence, organized at the NATO Headquarters, in Brussels.
The meeting represents an important moment in the preparation of the NATO Summit in The Hague, scheduled for June 24-25, 2025, being the first meeting held in this format with members of the new American administration.
The first working session was dedicated to further measures to strengthen the Allied deterrence and defence posture, as well as to the support package for Ukraine, according to the decisions adopted at the last NATO Summit held last year, in Washington.
Other important topics of discussion dealt with the need for resources to ensure the long-term transformation of the Alliance, under the circumstances of an equitable sharing of risks and responsibilities, and the development of the capabilities necessary to ensure a credible and effective deterrence and defence posture.
"Solidarity, unity and fair sharing of risks and responsibilities within the Alliance are the foundation of the Alliance's functioning. Romania is ready to undertake its share of the commitment regarding the capability development, at the same time continuing to contribute to NATO missions and operations. Thus, Romania will continue to be a reliable ally through its contribution to the allied efforts to strengthen the deterrence and defence posture", Minister Tîlvăr stated.
The strategic importance of the Black Sea region for the European and Euro-Atlantic security was reiterated, especially in the current security context in the region.
The second working session of the meeting took place within the NATO-Ukraine Council format, with the participation of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.
The Allies sent an important political signal of Allied unity and solidarity in providing support to Ukraine and welcomed its efforts to pursue the necessary defence reforms.
The presence of the EU High Representative emphasized the cooperation between the two international organizations to streamline efforts to support Ukraine in the fight against Russia's war of aggression, launched in February 2022.
In his speech, the Romanian Minister of Defence emphasized the multidimensional support that Romania offered to Ukraine and the importance of continuing NATO and EU efforts in this respect.
