Commander of the NATO Mission in Iraq met with the MoND leadership
On Friday, February 28, State Secretary for Defence Policy, Planning and International Relations, Simona Cojocaru, and the Chief of the Defence Staff, General Gheorghiță Vlad, had bilateral meetings with Lieutenant General Lucas Schreurs, Commander of the NATO Mission in Iraq (NMI).
During the talks, the state secretary emphasized Romania's firm commitment to stabilizing the security situation in Iraq, highlighting our country’s substantial contribution by participating with personnel in the NATO Mission in Iraq and in Operation Inherent Resolve, led by the USA. At the same time, the Romanian official reviewed the bilateral defence efforts with the Iraqi side.
In his turn, the NMI commander expressed his appreciation for Romania's troop contribution, pointed out the progress made by the allied mission and highlighted the complexity of the security situation in the region.
The talks between the Chief of the Defence Staff and Lieutenant General Lucas Schreurs focused on military cooperation and issues regarding the developments of the security situation. "The Romanian Armed Force is always ready to support allied efforts in promoting peace, security and stability. We will continue to work closely with colleagues from the NMI, just as we do with those from the Allied Joint Force Command Naples (JFCNP), the structure under whose authority this mission operates", General Gheorghiță Vlad stated at the end of the meeting.
