On Wednesday, July 3rd, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, Liviu-Ionuț Moșteanu, had a meeting, at the Ministry of National Defence headquarters, with US Senator Mark Kelly, member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee.
The talks focused on strengthening the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the United States in the field of defence, in the context of security challenges posed to the Black Sea region and recent developments on NATO's eastern flank. The two officials emphasized the importance of the American military presence in Romania, as an essential element for the Alliance's deterrence and defence posture in southeastern Europe.
During the meeting, minister Moșteanu stressed the relevance of the decisions made at the NATO Summit in The Hague, held last week, for the coherence and efficiency of the Alliance's defence posture. In this context, the officials highlighted Romania's role as a reliable ally, with active contributions to regional security and supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.
"The security of the Black Sea region is closely linked to the Euro-Atlantic security. The Strategic Partnership with the United States of America, based on trust, interoperability and solid commitments, is a pillar of national defence and regional stability," the Romanian official said.
During the talks, bilateral cooperation in the field of armed forces modernization was also addressed, with a focus on the equipment programs currently run with the American partner. The Romanian party presented the significant progress made in this field and reaffirmed Romania's commitment to continue investing in modern capabilities, compatible with NATO standards.
At the same time, the officials emphasized the importance of close coordination between Romania and the United States of America in the field of defence, including in managing the hybrid threats in the extended Black Sea region.
