Romanian-German ministerial dialogue in the field of defense
On Wednesday, January 28th, Minister of National Defence, Radu Miruță, had a bilateral meeting with his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius, in the context of the official visit of the Romanian governmental delegation led by the Prime Minister of Romania to Berlin.
The discussions aimed at consolidating Romanian-German defence cooperation, enhancing the strategic dialogue and strengthening the role of the two states in ensuring the security of NATO's Eastern Flank, in the context of an ever-changing complex security environment.
The two ministers emphasized the importance of implementing the decisions adopted at the NATO Summit in The Hague, in June 2025, including increasing investments in defence and maintaining a consistent, predictable and long-term support for Ukraine. “Bilateral defence cooperation between Romania and Germany materializes into concrete results and a solid mutual support within NATO missions, demonstrating the common commitment of the two states to provide an overall response to current security challenges,” the Romanian official emphasized.
As part of the discussions at ministerial level, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Gheorghiță Vlad, had a meeting with his German counterpart, General Carsten Breuer, focused on cooperation at operational level and on regional security developments. On this occasion, General Vlad thanked the German side for the constant support provided to Romania through the participation of the German Air Forces in the enhanced Air Policing Missions conducted on the national territory.
The agenda of the ministerial meeting also included the defence industry component, prospects for developing joint projects and for capitalizing on the European financing instruments (SAFE), for which Romania had recently published the list of projects. “For part of the products that Romania has introduced as joint procurements, Germany is the lead country that manages these acquisitions. It will mean a lower price per acquisition and we expect shorter delivery times,” Minister Miruță highlighted.
Within the framework of the meeting, the Romanian Ministry of National Defence and the Federal Ministry of Defence signed the Joint Declaration of Intent in the field of defence materials, a document with strategic value oriented towards the development, manufacturing and acquisition of state-of-the-art capabilities, aiming at the integration of the Romanian industry into European ecosystems. The cooperation will take place on four main levels: joint logistic support, bilateral acquisitions of products and services, co-development of military equipment and research & development in the field of defence technologies.
