Defence Minister’s bilateral meetings with his Canadian and Lithuanian counterparts
On Wednesday, March 16, Minister of National Defence, Vasile Dîncu, had bilateral meetings with his Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand, and the Lithuanian defence minister, Arvydas Anu¹auskas, as part of the Extraordinary Meeting of NATO Ministers of Defence.
The talks with the Canadian defence minister focused on the security situation from Ukraine and bilateral cooperation.
The Romanian official thanked for Canada’s contribution to the regional security consisting in the deployment and participation of the Royal Canadian Air Forces, starting 2017, in the enhanced Air Policing Mission conducted in Romania. At the same time, Vasile Dîncu emphasized Canada’s contribution to the consolidation of the deterrence and defence posture. In this context, the Romanian official invited his Canadian counterpart to visit Romania.
When referring to the bilateral cooperation, the minister of national defence pointed out the need to update the bilateral legal framework.
The talks with the Lithuanian defence minister, Arvydas Anu¹auskas, focused on the security situation on NATO’s Eastern flank, generated by the Russian Federation’s actions against Ukraine but also on bilateral cooperation elements between the two states.
The Romanian dignitary emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity within the North-Atlantic Alliance and reiterated the relevance of continuing taking measures which consolidate the deterrence and defence posture on NATO’s Eastern flank.
At bilateral level, the two officials highlighted the need of having a constant dialogue in order to coordinate efforts within NATO and EU, in the context of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine. The two officials agreed upon consolidating bilateral defence cooperation and increase political-military dialogue on common interest topics.
