Defence Minister’s meeting with the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Bucharest

On Tuesday, March 12th, Minister of National Defence, Angel Tîlvãr, met with the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Bucharest, Michael Dickerson, at the MoND Headquarters.
During the meeting, several topics of interest related to the current security environment were approached, with a particular emphasis on the developments on the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance. On this occasion, the Minister of National Defence emphasized the importance of strengthening the Strategic Partnership with the United States of America in the field of defence, appreciating, in the context, the United States’ constant commitment to strengthening security in the Black Sea region.

"The strategic partnership between Romania and the USA, in the field of defence, is important for both states, ensuring a solid collaboration in the face of security threats posed at regional level and not only. Also, the presence of the American soldiers on Romanian territory strengthens the joint commitment to maintaining regional stability", Minister Angel Tîlvãr emphasized.

The two officials pointed out the importance of continuing the joint efforts, with a view to completing the major procurement projects, including the exchange of expertise and technology, in order to modernize the Romanian Armed Force, increase the level of interoperability and strengthen the reaction capability to the security challenges posed from the Black Sea region.

In the context of the Russian Federation's war of aggression against Ukraine, the importance of the continuous provision of security assistance was underlined.

At the same time, Romania's full support for the advancement of the Republic of Moldova on the EU path was reiterated. "Regarding the collaboration in the field of defence, I want to emphasize the excellent level of dialogue and interaction with the Republic of Moldova, as well as the availability to respond to requests for support," the Romanian Minister of Defence said.

At the end of the meeting, Minister Tîlvãr emphasized that 2024 is an anniversary year, when we celebrate 20 years since Romania's accession to NATO, as well as the 75th anniversary of the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty. The enhancement of dialogue at political level and the continuation of a consistent coordination at defence level represent strategic advantages of the Alliance in combating regional and global challenges.
