Defence Minister’s meeting with the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain to Bucharest

On Monday, March 2, Minister of National Defence, Radu Miruță, had a meeting with the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain to Romania, H.E. Giles Portman, at the MoND headquarters.

 

The talks focused on the status of bilateral defence cooperation, recent developments in the regional security situation, and the enhancement of strategic dialogue to strengthen NATO's deterrence and defence posture on the Eastern flank, including the Black Sea. The joint commitment to support Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova was also reaffirmed, in the context of the security challenges generated by the Russian Federation's war of aggression.

 

Thus, practical options for enhancing collaboration in order to increase Romania's defence capacity, including in the field of procurement and consolidation of the national defence industry, were also analyzed. At the same time, the importance of the partnership in the Black Sea region, within allied context, as well as the need to continue the dialogue between the European Union and the United Kingdom in support of European security were highlighted.

 

An important topic of the discussions was the presence of the British Royal Air Force in Romania, as part of the air policing missions conducted under the aegis of NATO. This contribution represents a strategic component of the Allied commitment to securing the eastern flank, especially in the context of persistent tensions in the Black Sea region.

 

The officials stressed the importance of the Defence Cooperation Agreement between Romania and the United Kingdom, which strengthens and enhances bilateral relations, with a view to jointly addressing current strategic challenges, with mutual benefits for the two armed forces.

 

"Romania and the United Kingdom are strategic partners united by common objectives and a firm commitment to strengthening Euro-Atlantic security. We particularly appreciate the constant contribution of Great Britain to the security of the Black Sea region and are determined to further deepen defence cooperation," the Romanian Minister of Defence empahsized.
